My cell phone has a clock. So does my car. In my home, my computer has a clock, my oven has a clock, and I have a couple of plug in clocks around the house. One has a battery backup. Hardly ever have to change the battery.

I have a Rolex that I bought brand new in the early 90s. It needs to be serviced, it stopped keeping time and last time I inquired it was $600 or so to service it. I want to have it fixed at a Rolex service center, not just a watch repair guy so I need to get that done.
I don't wear any jewelry so wearing a watch is kind of a special occasion thing (like if I'm wearing a suit).
However, I would say that the minimum price for a good automatic watch that will keep accurate time is about $1000. Cheaper automatic watches do not have accurate movements (which is the rotor/timing assembly inside the watch.)
I get a chuckle out of people who claim that watches are an expensive hobby and that the minimum price to get a decent watch is $1,000! My daily wear watch is a manual watch from the 70s. I bought it on ebay for lass than $50 including shipping. It's not an automatic so the above comment doesn't directly apply but it works great and keeps time to within +-2 minutes per week (French Lorsa P62 movement) which is more than good enough for me.

I'll agree! I have $30 watches and I have $600 watches and although all are under the mystical $1k mark...the important thing is they all are pretty darned accurate...and more importantly I ENJOY them...ALL of them!
I do not doubt this is true. Do I personally want to do that to my wristwatch? No, I do not. I do not know what I am doing, and I prefer jewellers with the proper tools to do it expertly for me. That is my personal choice of course. Everyone is free to choose for himself/herself
I do not blame you. It think it might be difficult to do with some wristwatches, but I am not interested in finding out.
My neighbour buys wristwatch batteries at the dollar store and takes them with him to the flea market on weekends where he has a booth. He used to charge $6 to put in a battery. Not sure if he charges more now or not, but I would not let him do it for me. I prefer to take my Seiko to the Fast Fix.
OP, do not they still sell inexpensive windup Timex wristwatches? I still have a Longines that my spouse gifted me many, many years ago. It is a windup wristwatch and very attractive, but I never wear it anymore. Do not like to replace the straps on it. My classic Seiko sports wristwatch (which I believe is patterned on Rolex) has been my regular wristwatch for many years now.

No, they don't. I actually spent a lot of time looking for wind-up watches a few years ago. The only ones I could find were used ones on e-bay, but the faces/numbers were too small for me to see well.

Wow, I am surprised no one makes inexpensive Timex type wind up wristwatches anymore. I feel like a dinosaur.....

Me too, lol. I wish they did. I've had watch batteries go dead while I'm out somewhere having dinner or something. Much easier just to wind it a few times!

Well, they aren’t inexpensive. And they aren’t technically wind up. They are called automatic which means as you move throughout the day it self winds.
And they’re all men’s. I don’t like a man’s watch it’s too big.
