When I searched for a Nintendo Wii, it took me about 3 months of hard searching. So, when I heard the Nintendo DSi was coming out, I figured that I should pre-order it. It was the first time in my life that I did this. Well, I ordered it online and it shipped out 1 day prior to the release date, but it was finally delivered 5 days later. The point is that when I visited several stores, there was at least a dozen in each of them. I 'pre-ordered' for nothing, since I could have purchased it and used it when it was released.
This seems common with other video game systems like the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It even boils down to pre-ordering certain games. Other desperate souls will camp out at night (i.e. Cabbage Patch, Elmo dolls, PS3s).
Sometimes I pre-order things that I have an inkling they may run out of quickly. Usually if you pre-order from amazon there is a pre-order guarantee that your price won't go up. Also they have a special price for the day things come out, usually.
I like to preorder highly anticipated books through Amazon. I preordered the last Harry Potter book months in advance before it was released. I plan on preordering the new GRR Martin book ASAP. there are just some books I need to get my hands on immediately, especially if it's the newest installment of a series. other than that, there's not much else that I need right when it comes out so preordering is unnecessary.
I think electronics sell out faster, mainly because of resellers snatching up the stock. this was the case w/ the Wii, iPhone, and certain other electronics and even games. sometimes preordering can eliminate the need to camp out for days in front of a store and dealing w/ all the hassle that come w/ it
I've pre-ordered games for my son's XBOX 360 Elite. He finds out about these games, has to have them, but says he won't be able to get them because stores will be sold out of them, so pre-order them for him.
I never want anything bad enough that I have to pre order. I can wait. After all, the item will always be "new" to me regardless of how long it has been on the market plus it will most likely be cheaper later on, lol. If I had young kids it might be a different story for games and things.
I almost never pre-order stuff. I figure if it's so awesome it'll be worth the wait. The only thing I've ever pre-ordered were books, and I think maybe once a CD.
