I lived in Sioux Falls back in 1972 and at that time, it was very safe. At least where I lived. My step sister still lives there and she says it hasn't changed in that area and has only increased slightly to the point where there is a few places in town where she wouldn't walk through at night. She said that there is no place where she would be afraid to shop, dine, etc...
Before you ask, I don't remember the area I lived in. It was in the North West section just a quarter miles or so from downtown. All old, well established houses with very large trees, very quiet neighborhood where everybody visited when they saw each other outside. Step sister is one of those that has to keep up with the Jones' and she's lived in 7 or 8 houses since 1972 and every one she's had she bought new.
Sounds to me that you lived in the area known as South Sioux. It's west of the sports complex, east of the Great Plains Zoo and south of the airport. It's still a pretty nice older home area.
It may be that you weren't quite this far away. If so, the other area you might have been in is the Covell Lake area. Closer to Covell Lake the homes are still pretty well maintained. Not too far south and east, getting closer to downtown it's starting to get somewhat rundown.

Any of this sound familiar?
The name Covell Lake sounds familiar. I'd say the houses were 1920 vintage. Large, most were 2 story and a few were 2 story with a loft above with a dormer or two sticking out. Garages out back accessed either by long driveway along side the house or by the alley.

If the houses were really big, you're talking about the Cathedral district. These were the original "mansions" of Sioux Falls. All built in the very late 1800's through the 1920's. It is known as the Historic District now. Most of these huge old mansions have been or are being restored. Oddly enough, if you go to the immediate south of this area you get into what I consider the worst part of town. If you drive directly north of the Historic District it gets a little rundown too. It's like an island with the central palm tree being St. Josephs Cathedral.
Sioux Falls is a small town just like Rochester. Crimes there are nothing like in a normal sized major city. I have never felt in fear there nor in Rochester. I don't even feel fearful in a major city, but just watch my back everywhere.
I don't think there have been any murders this year. Just casino robberies which are common, but if the casinos would get armed security like in big cities, the robberies would stop.
You have nothing to fear. The so called higher crime areas there are nothing.
