Hi, I called the police station in Sioux Falls for information on an area I'm looking at, and here's the tips that I came up with when you want to check.
1. Call the police station and ask for the Neighborhood Watch department.
2. They said because they are government employees they cannot give out any information that could be deemed "suggestive" because what one person considers safe another may not.
3. They can give you a little insight into the area, however.
4. He said if you have the opportunity, drive by the area you're looking at three times in a day if you can, morning, afternoon, and after dark. This gives you a good feel for it and what is "normal" for that area on that time of day. If you have the chance to go by on a weekend night around 2 am that's helpful too, because you can see if there are lots of people around, rowdiness, etc...
5. Check on their website at their recent police log here:
City of Sioux Falls - Past 30 Day Call Log
It's long, but you can type in the street name that you're considering and it brings up the street and intersections for easier looking (super helpful!)
That's all, just thought I would share
