Hi, I called the police station in Sioux Falls for information on an area I'm looking at, and here's the tips that I came up with when you want to check.
1. Call the police station and ask for the Neighborhood Watch department.
2. They said because they are government employees they cannot give out any information that could be deemed "suggestive" because what one person considers safe another may not.
3. They can give you a little insight into the area, however.
4. He said if you have the opportunity, drive by the area you're looking at three times in a day if you can, morning, afternoon, and after dark. This gives you a good feel for it and what is "normal" for that area on that time of day. If you have the chance to go by on a weekend night around 2 am that's helpful too, because you can see if there are lots of people around, rowdiness, etc...
5. Check on their website at their recent police log here: City of Sioux Falls - Past 30 Day Call Log
It's long, but you can type in the street name that you're considering and it brings up the street and intersections for easier looking (super helpful!)

That's all, just thought I would share

Just to add a few things.

Only two ways to check crime locally are checking that Past 30 Day Log and reading the Argus Leader online everyday, we scouted out Sioux Falls for 2 Years prior to moving here in June of 2011. You can also sign up for Crime Spot for free and be notified any time there is a crime here. There was a Murder/Sucide just a couple of days ago due to a Domestic Violence case and I think it was their first one ever, I could be wrong.

Prior to renting any here I would HIGHLY recommend driving in that area on late Friday and Saturday nights since some areas are worse then others, make sure you drive around the parking lots several times. And personnally I would not want to spend 700 dollars a month on a complex that takes housing vouchers, there are a large number of income restricted complexes in Sioux Falls.

Over all it's pretty safe here most crimes are casino and convenience store robberies.

There are a lot of usefull information right here on the forum, if you can't find it ask.

Good Luck.

due to the possibility of lawsuits I'm sure they won't volunteer very much information, might be best just to go into a department store and casually ask the locals for advice instead. Most people in this area will strike up a conversation without much issue, they are not as closed off or in a hurry as some parts of the country.

Most people's idea of safe is different I've found, so useful somewhat, but not anymore than calling the neighborhood watch. I did find on the police reports good info, one area of townhouses I was considering had lots of calls for burglary and assault. Yes most areas are safe, but I'm looking to not live in those types of areas as I would think most people on here are looking for..
