Anybody out there remember the old Soo Speedway? It was located east of Sioux Falls on what is now Six Mile Road. At the intersecton of hwy 42 east and six mile road the remains of the track can be seen 1/4 mile north on six mile road and the old track is located on the east side of the road. The track was in operation from 1954 until 1958 with weekly Sunday night stock car racing. New owners attempted to run the track in 1959 and 1960 but folded midway through the 1960 season. It is difficult to image when you look at what is left out there but crowds of 4500 - 5000 crammed the little oval every Sunday night. Anybody have any old photos from this place?

I've seen the "ruins". I thought that has been cleared away now. I haven't driven down that road for years. I'm pretty sure a friend of mine raced there before he went to Husets. If you're an old race fan, you probably remember Ape Hanson. I think he would have been in his late teens about then.

Default Soo Speedway

Yep, sure do. Thanks to some old home movies! We have home movies of snowmobile racing at this track back in 1970-71 timeframe.

How bout this track located 1/2 mile south of Ellis? What's it's story?

That was Warpath Raceway for go-karts. The smaller oval to the right was for rentals for kids and the larger road course to the left was for actual bonafide go-kart racing. The entire layout was all asphalt which is why is still shows up. Myrl and Roys Asphalt paving company has a working site just south of the old track so it might not be there much longer.

My Dad, Russ Ripley, raced at that track. Hamms Beer was his sponsor and he had the bear painted on the side of the car. Arnie Niemaphro took over the car when Dad quit, after going over the South wall at Huset's.

Curious as I'm from out of town now. Husets ever get sold? No sympathy here for the owner, but I can't imagine how a couple years of neglect has hurt the place.

If I knew anything about racing....but I don't. Besides, from what I remember, upscale and Husets weren't really two words I'd put together often. It used to be a dirt track and a place where motorheads could put out their best. It's hard to reconcile a martini bar in there.

Maybe it will get back to form.
