I have a possible employment opportunity in Watertown. What areas should I look in to resettle my family? Schools are very important 8&6 yr old @home. How are Brookings, Madison? Welcoming to newcomers? I
Would like a place with a nice little downtown area, close to amenities, safe(although I cannot imagine anywhere in the entire state being less safe than even the quietest towns here in New Jersey, so it isn't the biggest concern). Would love to hear from transplanters from a larger metro area that resettled in a quiet place away from the rat race.

Are there serious flood worries around Watertown and surrounding areas? I've noticed the prices for homes seem higher in Watertown, is it due to affluence, school ratings, incomes in the area, or supply and demand. I appreciate any constructive comments you'll may have....

With the small population compared to where you're coming from and the low crime rate in this area, safety will be a non-issue anywhere in Watertown, Brookings, or Madison. Schools should be similar across the board as well. I wouldn't think you'd encounter difficulties as a newcomer, but I've always believed that if a person is friendly, keeps up their property, respects local customs, etc. they shouldn't have a big problem anywhere. Can't say much about housing prices other than the housing bubble and burst that happened most other places in the country never happened in SD. Don't know how familiar you are with the area so some other points are below.

PROS:
The area is very beautiful and peaceful
Great hunting and fishing if you're into it
No traffic anywhere to be found

CONS:
The area is very culturally homogenous and there is little diversity
You'll be driving 1-3 hours for shopping beyond Target or Walmart
Winter can be HELL on Earth
