Hello there! We are considering a move from East TN to somewhere in South Carolina. To be honest I've never been anywhere except Myrtle Beach so I am not sure how the other areas are. I thought this would be a great place to come for suggestions.

About us, we are a family of 4, with 2 kids 8 and 11. We would love to live as close to the ocean as possible. No more than maybe a 15 minute drive. I'm not big on touristy areas, but I'd still love shopping to be somewhat nearby. The schools of course would have to be really good. We aren't looking to buy a house right off, just rent for now. We'd like to keep rent somewhere between $1k and $1,500k a month for a 3br.

Can anyone give me suggestions of towns that are even remotely like this?

You may want to check out the Beaufort area. All coastal areas will have tourism, but not the gaudy in your face as Myrtle Beach does.

Why are you moving? Do you have jobs lined up? Why move here if you've only been to MYB?

East TN is kind of a hot spot right now, and much more affordable than SC. But to answer your question, the closest places to the beach with decent schools would be either Summerville or Bluffton (areas within your price range).

Just want a change. We've both been here our entire lives and are pretty much over the area. We want to live near the beach, but not be a super long drive from TN. Myrtle Beach is only 6 hours away and wouldn't require a lengthy drive coming back for holidays or for a visit.

I've been looking to relocate myself from Macon Georgia and I've always been interested in living near the coast.

I am looking to move to the Mount Pleasant area which is across the harbor from Charleston. This is a upscale area so a 3 bedroom rent might be out of your range but not sure about that. I know 1 bedrooms are 900-1000 in the area but you can probably get special rates depending on when you inquire about one. There will be plenty of shopping in this area and they have good schools here.

You could also look at West Ashley, John's Island, North Charleston / Goose Creek and further inland is Summerville, all areas near Charleston. North Charleston will be least expensive of the areas.

I think Beaufort SC will probably be too small for you if you like being near shopping.

I've also considered Socastee near Myrtle Beach, and Conway, which are out of the tourist area a little bit. Don't know much about the schools but I think they are probably good enough.

You could also look at Wilmington NC which is a hour or so north of myrtle beach. It is kind of a smaller Charleston.
