Homestead exemption - If as of December 31 you were 65 years of age or older, or if you were totally disabled or legally blind, and lived in South Carolina for at least one year as of December 31, you may qualify for the homestead exemption. The homestead exemption excludes the first $50,000 from the fair market value of your legal residence. Application for the homestead exemption should be made at the County Auditor's office. Call 803/642-1514 for information.

SC's version of disabled is wheelchair bound, or paralyzed. They do not accept the fact that you are on Social security disability. I just found that out the hard way. Oh and if you are legally blind.

I received the Homestead Exemption with my Declaration of Disability decision letter from the Social Security Administration. I am on Social Security disability not SSI.

When my husband turned 65 our County Treasurer's office told us to being in the paperwork from Social Security and they refunded our taxes back to the date of my disability. Yessss they gave us money back, hard to believe I know.
