Hi everyone and Happy New Year. Well, we've begun another holiday tradition with me taking off the decorations from our tree and in doing so, blocking hubby's football view! Ah....just nothing like family traditions.

Seriously, this year we got a live potted tree for Christmas. It is only a few feet high and we've watered it and it is doing great, will soon have its decorations off and I just think it is such a shame to throw it out. Is there anyplace in Rapid that might re-purpose a live tree? A new business or a business wanting to landscape or something? I know the ground is hard, but I do see they're digging for our downtown reno so ... I thought maybe??? Anyway, if anyone has a good idea, please let me know. Thanks!

What kind of potted tree is it?
Does it look anything like this? If so, it certainly won't survive a winter in South Dakota, being a subtropical species...

Nothing comes to mind. What kind of tree is it? That is a neat idea.

Zone13 - Actually our tree does not resemble the picture you posted. The tree we have is a variety that is short-needled, green and is closest in appearance to a Balsam Fir....with the exception that the needles are more pointed versus flat like the Fir. Dang, of all the stuff we've kept...why didn't I keep the tag that came with it?

SD4020 - Thanks!! I am just having such a hard time with the idea of throwing away a live potted tree that is surviving well despite tinsel and ornaments!!

Gee, if you lived close to me, I'd pop over and pick it up. Would love to have something like that as a house plant, or in my office. I'm sure you can find someone who would love to have it. Great idea to donate it to your town. There may be an employee in the park department who knows horticulture and can identify the tree and will know whether it can survive SD winters outdoors.

Hi Avalonpark - it is a small tree about 3 feet tall from root ball to the top.

SD4020 - I think it is something close to a balsam fir ... I really should have hung onto the tags, because I am just going on pictures of what looks close. I am going to try setting it out on the porch after I de-tinsel the poor thing to test it for hardiness. We played in the Black Hills Forest today and loved it....wondering if I can keep this poor child alive long enough until we can purchase land?? Hmmm?

You might be able to do that. Just keep the roots tended and replant in a larger pot. Not sure how fir would handle the dryer climate we have. It might be good to keep it inside until the freeze is over. If it was in the ground and planted I wouldn't be to worried.
