A discussion on how the soil of Pine Ridge SD is excellent for growing industrial hemp, except it's illegal, so the US must import all ours from Canada

Two articles about the extreme alcoholism that's rampant on the Pine Ridge reservation. (Kristof and his wife are amazing, and are my favorite globe-trotting humanitarian writers).

Depending on what you are looking for in the way of housing, and what your standards are is going to be a big determining factor in whether or not you find what you are looking for. By and large, unless there is a foreclosure, there are no homes for sale. You might look just off the reservation lands for housing. If you are a nurse, you obviously want to be looking for work with IHS.

Keep in mind, Pine Ridge is a close community, and outsiders usually have a tough time being accepted, native blood not withstanding. You may be full of helpful ideas, but that does not mean they will be receptive. Be prepared for a long, hard road. Many there will feel that they do not want or need your help. It's nothing personal - they treat everyone that way. If you truly have a desire to help, get connected with an organization that is already established and providing services. You will have a better chance of making a difference that way. There are those few that will be receptive and open - they are usually the youth. Those who want to change things for themselves have already moved off the reservation.

I don't mean to be completely discouraging, I just want you to understand what you are up against. If you want to make a difference at Pine Ridge, I commend you. My husband is a school teacher at a community between the reservations (Pine Ridge and Rosebud). Most of his kids are native. Even as young as kindergarten, these children exhibit the traits of their elders. If they don't want to do something, they don't understand why they should have to, and they don't care, either. And if they want something, they don't understand why you don't just give it to them. It is a struggle against centuries old attitudes, and it is sad and frustrating.

I truly hope you find a place to do something that will help them. Just do your research, and be prepared for the challenge of your life!
