I will be comming to the Pine Ridge reservation the end of Feb. Any one have any ideas on sites/ places to see in the winter??? Any place for cool winter photography??? And, any horseback riding stables open in the winter???
Any info on anything else that would be interesting? Thanks!!
The Badlands are close by and even ON the Pine Ridge Reservation so I am sure you will see that. Other than the Badlands there is not a lot to see out east. I am sure you will visit the Black Hills.

Yea, you were right the first time. The car museum is in Murdo. We went through it a few years ago and it was pretty cool. They had some Elvis stuff in there.
But if your looking for info on Mitchell, I guess your out of luck. Nobody from around there... Oh wait, their's Jammie. She went through there once and can probably answer something. hahaha

My Dear Butterfly,
There really is not much to see in Pine Ridge. Quite bleak. Some of the worst land in the state of South Dakota was given the Indians. The land was a gunnery and missle range during WW2. There are actually land mines in the areas.
It is absolutely shameful what the State of South Dakota has done to the Indians, especially in the Pine Ridge Reservation area.
i camped in mitchell a few years ago. had some adventure!!!! mitchell has doll museum, corn palace, and a terrific cabelas. also safe museum was open in the summer. not sure if its still available in summers. as a locksmith/safe worker, that was of interest to me.

Hal,
Ya, I'm quite familiar with the situations out there & the History. I know about the historical sites already i was just curious if there was anything else starting up.
Because of the situations out there is why my Husband and I are going to possibly relocate there for awhile. We are medical people. And Ive been told by some residents out there they need to have decent health care providers and not the "Flunk outs"
Ive also been in contact with a few churches so I'll be meeting with them on our trip also and others.
We plan on making 3 trips before our move. We are planning this out slowely.
This won't be just comming to work for a few months, we will be in it for the long hall. We are not quitters and we do not walk out on people.
we are very excited to have this opportunity in our lives to come there.
We crrently live in a poverty area( though not as bad as pine ridge) there high alcoholism, and suicides also. We are not big city people, I guess maybee we are more out doorsy, maybee "Hippees" but not the rainbow people. lol
There was an interesting article in The Rapid City Journal on 1/16/08 about a session at the Governor's Conference on Tourism titled "Clearing up the misconceptions about travel and tourism on the reservations". The reporter quoted Karen Kern, executive director of the Great Lakes of South Dakota Tourism Association, as saying that she recommended the Native American Scenic Byway on Pine Ridge stating "It's one of the most beautiful drives I've ever been on". We are looking forward to taking this drive on our next visit to South Dakota.
