Well, our trip is getting closer! I can't wait! My wife and I are going to be bringing our nephew (11 years old) along on the trip because he's never been out of florida, and never been on a plane.
The trip is June 28 - July 5th. We are staying at the Alex Johnson hotel for 2 days and then off to Custer to stay at the Super 8 for the rest of the week. I really need to sit down and put together some sort of plans so we can maximize our time there.
DannyB, I'd like to take my nephew to a water park one day and I know there are several around the hills, even down in Hot Springs. I've never been to any of them. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of going to the Mammoth Site one morning and then maybe the water park near there in the afternoon one day.
COUNTDOWN!!!!
cool! have a great time, in the hills!
Thanks! I can't wait. I heard my nephew was out buying luggage tonight. I bet he got a "carry on" too, cause you know, any good travelor has to have one of those. I'm actually flying to Idaho Falls tomorrow for 4 days so I'll be offline until Monday when I get back.
If you are staying at the Super 8 in Hot Springs, you will find that the Mamouth site is next door, about 200 ft up the ridge. The "water park" you are talking about is a thermal mineral spring known as Evans Plunge. It is located on the southwest side of Hot Springs and nearly anyone can give directions on how to get there. Don't forget to stop for a meal at Sneakey's Chicken. It is on the main drag, near the north end of town.

uh
yep, that's the one. I've been past there and have been to the Mammoth Site maybe 4 times over the years. It's really neat to see how the site changes as they continue to dig. The last time I was there, I actually felt like they'd gone too far and it had lost some of its charm. I can't wait to see it this time and I know my nephew will love it. All boys love things like that.
You'll have a blast staying at The Alex Johnson. Just don't stay on the 8th floor because according to local legend, it's haunted! Also be sure to check out the swastikas hidden in the hotel decor (chandeliers, tiles). The swastika is actually a Native American symbol of power and it can be found everywhere in the Alex Johnson. Your hotel is right in the heart of old town so there are plenty of great restaurants in walking distance. Botticelli's, Wine Cellar, Delmonico, Firehouse, Landmark, Tally's, and The Enigma are all within one block of the Alex Johnson Hotel. You are also right next to Art Alley and The Elks Theater.
Evans Plunge is a great place to go if you are in Hot Springs but Rapid City's best waterpark is WaTiki which is in between the La Quinta and Marriott east of town. I think admission is free for 3 and under too.
Alright!!!! I'm so happy for you and your wife and nephew. The Hills are supposed to be green and lush now so you'll get to see the real beauty of them. Unfortunately, they've been a bit drab for several years now.
Just wanted to say I'm glad for you and that I third the suggestion of Evans Plunge. It's actually considered to be "healing waters".
If its nice weather I would recommend Rushmore Waterslides - VERY fun! we go every year just to wade in their nice pools Evan's plunge is nice too though if you are in that area!
If your nephew is old enough, take him to The Ranch. It's just south of Rapid City across the highway from the Waterslides and they have go karts, bumper boats, rock walls, and a huge arcade with ice cream and treats too. You also might want to take him to Dinosaur Park on Skyline Drive. I had a blast there when I was little and it's a great view of Rapid City and the Black Hills!
Make Sure you go to Paddy O'niels in the basement of the Alex Johnson, one of my favorite bars. Even so more that it's non smoking
enjoy
