Ever wonder what it might be like to work on a mission on our Moon, or a mission to Europa? NASA and ESA both have come up with video games for the public to do just that.

NASA's released a game called Moonbase Alpha that lets you work on the Moon. The graphics look pretty impressive. It allows play for a single player or can be played with up to six people. Best of all it's free to download.

ESA has a game (still a prototype) that involves a mission to Europa. This one involves learning and team cooperation. The graphics aren't particularly stunning, but the game looks pretty complex. ESA contracted it to MindArk in Sweden, but I think would've been more graphically stunning if they had farmed it out to Croteam who created the Serious Sam games. It's a massive interactive multiplayer online game, in the same sense as WoW. The game hasn't been released, but ESA has released a video of the current prototype. I'm not sure if it will be available for free though.

NASA was thinking about not releasing Moonbase Alpha in light of the cancellation of any manned missions to establish a colony on the Moon anytime in the near future, but ultimately decided to release the game anyway. Good decision because it "allows" the public to participate and have some fun with a potentially realistic scenario. Who knows? At the very least it may help keep the public attention and interest in such lunar projects.
