if we are literary agents sure. the universe is full of crap tons of energy, and matter, for that matter. there are no voids at all. another point of the article is that some combination of those two must exist. ergo, if there was no matter, but unimaginable god-like amounts of energy...then the future state of today is possible
btw - i am surprised no one mentioned this....mebbe no one is married, but any man can attest that women are experts at making something out of nothing......
I think the latter is only true if the arrow of time is universal, which we only know is true following the Big Bang event. If it isn't, then it's not clear what is even meant by giving rise to something.
There is no reason time cannot flow backwards, BUT-- in order to return to a previous time, EVERYTHING, icluding every single quark, would have to return to its state at the previous time...Not only do you have to get the Genie back in the bottle, but every quark has to be in the same starting spot..Not impossible but too improbable to ever happen.
Origin of the universe-- It seems easier to conceptualize if we run the motion picture backwards, approaching Time Zero asymptotically, but never quite getting to zero....For the universe to have a time zero (a complete void) and then suddenly all of both energy & matter to appear just doesn't make any sense at all....unless we claim there is a God/Creator...but then we'd have to explain the origins of God-. Not only would that reduce to the same argument, but also add an exrtra layer of complexity to the theory-- a practice frowned upon among scientists.

According to the zero-energy universe theorem, the net energy of the Universe is exactly that: zero. The matter-energy of the Universe is exactly cancelled out by negative energy of gravity. Hence, it may be possible to construct a Universe that requires no extra energy input. It's a zero-sum outcome.
As for time flowing backwards, one could conceptualize that you're quantum tunneling backwards in time, rather than in space. The Universe would then accommodate it by collapsing into a different quantum state. I have no idea how you'd accomplish that, but quantum tunneling has a non-zero probability.
