My son is finishing up his last year of middle school. He always starts off woth a bang, but this time of year things go downhill. He keeps forgetting to turn in assignments, do them even just write them down. This morning I dropped him off early for school for tutoring and he forgot to go.

He has aspergers which I think it has a lot to do with what is happening. I am at a loss how to help him, and at my wits end. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Make out a daily check list for him and as he gets things accomplished he can check them off.
This way he only has to remember to look at his checklist and he does not have to remember everything else.

He was on an IEP, but we changed to a 504. I had asked to have the teachers check he has everything written down, and was told they can't so that. I know if I pushed they would, but it's time he learns how to do it himself. I don't want him so supported he can't function in the real world.

CSD, thanks I just made him a checklist, but he doesn't remember to write it down in school. Even with a list. I feel for him, but I know he is capable of so much more.

Does he have an *agenda* type book where he should be writing all his assignments? Our middle school has the kids trained to write the assignments down from the board in each class every day. He might need reminders from the teachers at first, but should get into the routine. If there is one thing asperger's kids are good at it is routines (at least my granddaugher is).

Nana thanks he does. He forgets. We are having him retested as I am on the fence whether or not he has aspergers. We had just moved and he wasn't himself, he is a completely different kid now.

He is entitled to the help of a behavioral therapist. If it isn't in his IEP, ask for it to be added. They can help with specific techniques far better than generic ones from an Internet forum.

He may be going through puberty as well. That can change things a lot.

Find out if the teachers have a web page. Ours do and homework is put on it everyday. Sometimes they do it a week at a time and I can check there.

I have high school students and ask them every day about their homework. When they give me an I don't know, I go through class by class and have them tell me.

I will never be told I didn't check on them or show interest and that's why they didn't succeed.

According to the Aspergers tests, I have a slight case of it. I never knew it. Never had an iep and was an honor student plus deans list in college.

I think we are far too quick to label kids these days. I'm not saying the parents do it. I think the schools do it.

Why did you change to a 504?
