I think ADD/ADHD can be special needs. I struggled throughout school with trouble focusing, getting drstracted & loosing assignments, missing due dates, keeping on task, being antsy, ect. In HS I started going to the resource room which helped me focus, remember assignments, keep on task, ect. Because of that little bit of extra help, I graduated on the honor roll and was given an achievement award and a small scholorship. After HS, I was finally diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I was pushed to go on meds but opted not to because I had already learned to simply do things a little differently. I still sometimes struggle with it, but I know how to cope now.

But in answer to your question, even though I didn't know I was ADD at the time, that little bit of "special needs" help made all the difference for me. At one point, a member of the school board told me and my father that I should be pulled out of public HS because I had no chance of graduating. Wouldn't you know it, he was the very same board member who was handing out diplomas at my graduation. I looked him dead in the eye as I shook his hand. I will never forget that moment... the man's earlier comments had made me feel depressed, feeling like I had no hope of ever making it so it was no use trying (and he was not in any way polite about the things he said to me). The resource class gave me new hope, and I pulled through with flying colors.
