Raw talent has remained consitent through different times. I dont believe equip is as much a factor as todays conditioning and training athletes under-go from youth on up.

that depends on the sport. take tennis for instance, back in the old days they used wooden rackets, today they use carbon fiber rackets. why? because players like the williams sisters, and other would destroy tennis rackets every game. metal rackets are a help, but they tend to be heavy. so carbon fiber is the material of choice. its light weight, and strong and can handle the forces.

Same with ice hockey. The sticks and skates today make a huge difference versus the ones used even just 20 years ago.

you can make the same case for any sport, as i pointed out in my post. golf for instance has transitioned from wooden shaft clubs, to steel, to carbon fiber. the heads of the clubs has also transitioned in so many ways its hard to keep up.
the best race cars in the 20s would be embarrassed to be on the same track as modern race cars.
baseballs, and baseball bats have also changed a lot over the years.
