I would not call this a race but an exhibition. Once upon a time, the America;s Cup was contested with 12m boats in which sailing skill was more important than technology.
Since the Aussies were permitted to throw in the winged keel in 1983, the contest has moved to a contest of boat building. Not better or worse, just a different contest.
And now we have a 223' sail funded by a billionaire many times over?
Ahh....no longer the contest I used to love, where tactics and seamanship ruled the day and races were narrow victories.
Today? Larry E's boat won by 15:28 minutes...yawn!!
This is a hollow victory. Reportedly Ellison wants to restore the race to a multinational format and monohull yachts. He's purchased the old Astor mansion 'Beechwood' in Newport, RI and there is speculation he may host the defense of the cup in Newport. If all of these 'ifs' come to fruition then this victory will be worth it. At the very least the America's Cup is not the race it once was. Here's to hoping Ellison can change that.
