North Springfield has a lot of crime, and you do hear gunshots. Around the MSU campus there are a lot of creepy people that prey on the students and other residents.

North-central and North-west Springfield are generally the least attractive areas (for various reasons) but the North-east area has a small airport in the center (sort of) of the region. If you draw concentric circles with the airport at the center I think typically the farther from the airport, on any of the circles, the higher the living conditions. The MSU-area has advantages if you are a student but if not, unless you're dating or married to a student it's probably not to your benefit to live in that area. However, all things considered, I feel that looking for reasons not to live in an area is the wrong approach because you'll find issues with any area. Better to look for reasons why you should live in a certain area. Of course there are deal-breakers ... for me: a place next to the train tracks is generally out of the question. But I might reconsider if it was offered at 75% below market rate and I worked two blocks away!
