I recently moved to Springfield, and am trying to scout out the local ISPs. Mediacom seems like the juggernaut around here, but there prices are steep for the speed, or they require a very lengthy contract ($55+/mo. for 12mbps if I want less than a 2 year contract). Does anyone know of any other providers?

Thanks

AT&T has fiber optic (Uverse) and DSL--both are going to connect inside your house via a phone line--which is less expensive than Mediacom. It's painful, really. As much as I hate Mediacom, I hate DSL, especially since we live in an older house. Can't seem to win here. Good luck!

Yeah, I can completely understand. Looks like Uverse that AT&T provides in the Springfield area is pretty slow, 6mbps at the highest price, but that is half of what Mediacom can provide. Looks like the internet choices are severely limited. Thanks for the help!

We went with At&t and if I had to do it over again I would go with Mediacom. At&t does not have Uverse, atleast in my neighborhood, which is in central Springfield. It is cheap, but for a reason. It is really slow, and when there is a storm it usually goes out.

Aren't there any independent companies any more? I hate feeding the corporate conglomerate beast. Don't they have laws against monopolies?

Agree 20yrs. Way out here I am capped at a whopping 1.5mbs download speed. And there is no other offer. 5 miles away have 10mb dl. I was basically told to suck it up because that is all they offer and they are the only ones around.

This just in-- Call 800-875-0894 (one of the many mediacom #s), I just got set up with 12 mbps cable internet for $20 ($27.90 with modem and router) per month. That is NOT a bundled price--although they will try to sell you one, briefly--that is Internet only. I had to do a one year agreement, but its free install, and quite a speedy appointment for hookup. That's twice the speed of my ATT Uverse, which I've had a tech here three times in about 2 weeks, they fix it, and it goes out again. The other day, I made a "last straw" appointment for tech service and the dude didn't show or call during the ridiculous 5 hour appointment window they make you set up. AND, about half the price. Win.

Oh, that's in Springfield near Phelps-Grove Park/MSU. And I do not work for Mediacom or any affiliates!

Oh no! I just signed up for Mediacom for 12mbps for a lot more (about $55/mo.)! Looks like I'll have to give that number a call and see what I can do! Thanks for the find.
