I saw this little guy in my yard pretty close to the house, in Nixa, while I was mowing. Anyone have any idea what kind it is? It was only about 8 inches long.

Thanks a bunch.

Yep. Looks like a copperhead or a moccasin.

I just thought it was a king or rat snake when I first saw it. I typically look at snakes' heads to see if they are poisonous or not, if they are shaped like a spade I dispose of them and if not I let them be. However, this one's head was kind of in-between. It didn't look like a spade until I made it mad and it got in that strike position.

I guess I'll get some of that sulfer spray and go around the house. We had a blacksnake living under the front porch one year and the spray kept him away.

If anyone has any other ideas as to what this one might be let me know.

Definitely not a copperhead. See http://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/file.../5177_3017.pdf . For other Missouri snakes see http://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/file.../5187_3026.pdf .

I'm guessing very young black snake, but I'd have to have a better photo to do more than guess.

After showing the picture to a few more people I'm starting to think it is a hog nose snake. Before is stood up to start striking the head didn't seem to be a spade shaped. I've been told that a hog-nosed snake will flatten its head to look more menacing.

Might want to stay blacksnake friendly around the house as they are predators of other snakes, including Missouri's pit vipers.
