I saw the post titled "Missouri laws" and it made me think, are there any odd or unique laws a newby to the area might need to be made aware of? I already read up on the Missouri gun laws which we found refreshing after living in a "police state" in New England. Basically only the criminals have guns here. But that aside, I think people are often suprised at the state to state differences. My husband about fainted seeing liquor in a convenience store there.

The only one I know of...is because I got caught doing it...is that if you buy a used car here you have to remove previous owners plates and get your own, you can't just transfer to another name. I bought a car, the previous owner was here for years and never took old plates off either and I got stopped and the cop took the plates off and gave me a ticket for improper registration.

There is also a window tint law (not sure what %). Also, you must have a front and back license plate.

Default Not many...

I've lived here two years (Nevada and CA before) and haven't really found anything terribly different. You pay both vehicle registration and personal property tax which is different than NV or CA. Driving is pretty much the same laws. I think the plate thing is state to state too...I've always had to get new plates on a car.

Things are a lot easier now...used to be a lot more restrictions about stores, liquor, Sunday's, etc...but most of them have been eased up for those who want/need to shop on Sunday's or have a cocktail/wine with their dinner.

You'll probably find LESS rules and laws than your used to...certainly now state owned liquor stores.

Have fun....

After California I would think the less rules, regulations and laws would be quite refreshing. They're still trying to crank-out 2,000-3,000 a year here!

Looking forward to enjoying the difference!

If you purchase a vehicle (new or used) in Missouri, YOU HAVE TO PAY STATE TAXES at the Dept of Motor Vehicles in order to register & get new tags for your vehicle.
My boyfriend was born and raised in Texas and purchased a new vehicle not realizing he would have to pay DMV for the taxes and he still has not paid the taxes. In Texas and some other states the taxes are included in the purchase amount of the vehicle and they mail the tags to you. Needless to say....he purchased the vehicle in 01/2008 and still does not have tags because he does not have the $1500-$2000 to pay the taxes and late fee of $200 to DMV.

Yes, I agree, I think the major difference is the personal property taxes and the paying of the taxes on purchased vehicles to the DMV. Causes lots of newbies major headaches *LOL* !!!! My supervisor had a friend that moved here from Illinois and he purchase a vehicle and never went to get tags because he thought they would mail them to him. So he got pulled over bc his temp tags had expired and got a ticket for not registering and tagging his vehicle.
