It's just a short way up the road - but any real differences in weather?

Real Estate prices seem lower in Mesquite but it's not nearly as scenic and it's really just a truck stop casino strip - not a city so missing out on a lot of conveniences and necessities.

We are Californians currently living in Florida (HORRIBLE WEATHER) but looking to semi-retire somewhere in the west/southwest.

St. George is attractive on paper (golf and general area feel) - but NV does not tax Social Security income (or any income) - while UT takes a 4.95% flat rate. Property tax is only about .01% higher in NV. These are all cost of living things to consider as well.

We've been to Mesquite, but never drove any further north so will visit St. George first to see first hand. That might come sometime soon. We've also been looking a tiny bit at West Texas, NM, AZ as well (anything to get out of the cesspool of humidity hell known as Florida).

Mesquite is almost 2000 feet lower in elevation and almost always warmer. Sometimes 5-10 degrees warmer. St. George can get pretty chilly in the winter. 20's overnight is common in STG. Not so much Mesquite. Mesquite is also hotter in the summertime.

There is a significant difference in the amount of things to do in St. George vs Mesquite. Both have golf, but other than that about the only thing Mesquite offers is casinos. There is some scenery around it but nothing compared to St. George.

While you will save on state income tax, you will lose on fueling any vehicles you own - gasoline tax is higher in Nevada, so if you do much traveling it will add up.

Mesquite will be hotter in the summer, but also slightly warmer in the winter.

If you're considering the difference in real estate prices as a factor, maybe look at some of the towns around St. George, you'll generally find prices to be a bit lower but you'll still be close enough to enjoy everything else it offers.
