We are a lesbian couple with two teenagers considering a move to STL. Can anyone offer an opinion or guidance around areas that may be safe and gay-friendly, yet have good middle / high schools? We'll be looking to buy a house, and can probably afford in the $300k range. Here's one other little catch - the schools must offer girl's field hockey.

Default St. Louis is pretty friendly over-all

Hi there:

St. Louis is a pretty tolerent place over-all and I don't think that you would have too many problems no matter where you decided to live. That said, the areas that seem to be more gay friendly don't seem to have the best school districts.

A good number of the openly gay people that I know live in the city itself, but St. Louis city schools suck. Therefore, I'd probably look for the other things that are important to you first, then factor in the gay thing second. If that makes any sense?

I own a real estate and mortgage company here in St. Louis and while I'm not gay, I'd love a shot at your business. Drop me a line if you would like me to do further research for you.

STLtoday - Prep Sports - Field Hockey

The above should help with field hockey. Maneuver around and click on list of schools that offer it on right hand side of page. These are high schools that offer it, many of which are private but some public schools offer it too.

Traditionally the areas of the Central West End, and Tower Grove area in the city have been more gay friendly than others. I'd agree that the city would have more people with similar lifestyle if that is what you are seeking....also more liberal and tolerant areas also include the U.City area as well.

In general St. Louis is a pretty tolerant place.

A buddy of mine is the editor of the St. Louis Magazine. His name is Steve Schenkenberg. Google the website, while he isn't gay himself, he would certainly know that info pretty well and could help steer you in the right direction. He's a great guy.

I'm sorry I can't offer any advise about the schools. Our kids are home schooled so I'm a bit out of touch on that aspect. But like Bob Mitchel, I'd be happy to offer my services to you when you find a place. I own a Home Inspection company that services the entire St. Louis Missouri Metro Area.

If I remember right Parkway schools offer feild hockey. And they aren't bad schools....they area located in Creve Couer area. Creve Couer is a decent area, I would consider it safe. (I am a single mom so I tend to judge by if I would live there or not) I don't know how tolerant they are to gay couples....Although I doubt you will be on a block full of gay couples, I wouldn't expect harassment there. You may get a couple of strange looks at times, but overall I do believe that people here are open enough to the idea.
