This should be my last thread I couldn't find much here about the various riverboats. This is the page I'm looking at - Gateway Arch Riverfront | September-November Cruises (http://www.gatewayarch.com/Arch/info/act.riverboat.fall.aspx - broken link) - do the locals enjoy any occasionally, or are they just "the tourist thing"? Are any really lame, not worth the money?

Are there any other water activities? I don't know what I'm looking for, hubby wants to know. What is mostly located right along the river, besides restaurants? Thanks all.

My family did the Kimmswick cruise and really enjoyed it. Kimmswick is a charming little river town in Jefferson County. People love browsing the shops, seeing the historic buildings, and eating at the Blue Owl.
I've also been on a Christmas Cruise, which begins at downtown St Louis by the arch, goes downriver several miles and back with no stops. It includes a buffet dinner which I liked.
The Alton riverfront has a marina, a riverboat casino, an antique mall, and riverfront park with a great view of the beautiful Clark Bridge.
The Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower at Hartford, Illinois, affords a commanding view of the confluence of the two great rivers. Another view can be seen from Confluence Point State Park on the Missouri side.
The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in north St Louis used to be part of old Route 66, and is now part of a hiking/biking trail system. The bridge has awesome views and is a favorite spot for eagle watchers too.
Of course downtown St Louis has the Gateway Arch and museum. There are helicopter tours, and if you can afford to, I'd highly recommend taking the longest one on a clear day-- it's awesome! There's also Laclede's Landing, with a casino, wax museum, restaurants and bars, historic buildings, carriage rides, etc.
Not sure if any of this is what you're looking for, but I have found all of these things very enjoyable.

The downtown boat rides are mostly for the tourists. You'll see good views of downtown and points north and south. Thery're not authentic steam powered riverboats, though.

There are only a few "real" paddle wheelers that take passengers remaining in the country. Even then most are diesel or diesel-electric. I used to work on the PA Denny (now in Cincinatti).

Personally I enjoy river time. The Mark Twain in Hannibal, while not a real wheel-driven vessel is still a pretty good ride.

You can also take a helicopter ride from the StL riverfront.

We have done the ride on the Mississippi. Yes, it is mostly tourists... but it was ok. On a nice day, cool view of downtown. Slightly embarrassing as a local, however, as the riverfront is SO polluted... the tour guide POINTS OUT and discusses trash on the side of the river. “Old car that is a remnant of the Great Flood of...” blah, blah, blah. It was quite tacky. I just wish that St. Louis would realize the asset that the river is and clean it up!

Does not leave a good impression on visitors. was in town over the weekend with a friend from NY/CA and she thought the river/riverfront was gross with no charm.

Hannibal makes a better impression (which isn't saying much)

Exactly! Hannibal does it up!! We leave our banks trashy and filthy and then try to show them off and sell them as a St. Louis feature?? No wonder people don't go near the river...
