St Louis must have more universities and colleges than any city I know. That said, if one tried to find an apartment near a college, would one not find it more expensive than usual neighborhoods? Does living near a college cause rents to be higher?

Thanks.

^I think, if anything, it causes the rental market to be a bit tighter; particularly in late summer when most students are moving into new apartments.

They will always be in demand (one of the key reasons my friend bought a place across from Lindenwood in St. Charles), so they are great investments.

That said, students tend to be cheap/poor so there's kind of an inherent cap in marketing to students.

Making the market tighter should also make it more costly, shouldn't it? Not in renovated houses, of course, but in newer style apartment buildings?

^In general yes, but I think that because of that top end inherent to the market, it's typically not too much of an issue for non-students looking in the same area.

Most rentals that go to students are unlikely to command much more than $300 or maybe $400 per bedroom because most students simply can't afford any more than that.

I see what you are saying now. All right. Thank you. I'd love to have access to a good university or college. Not as a student but as an auditor and use of their libraries. Some colleges do not now allow auditing but I think many still do.

Any university in particular you'd like to live near? I know you also rely on public transit to get around so obviously Lindenwood is out. Maybe Webster?

Webster is tempting because of what I've heard about their library. Washington U is also very tempting because I know a bit about it and because of its vast array of fields covered.

I've not given that a lot of thought yet. It depends on what is there and do I feel it is worth more or less.

Thanks much. I may be back.

There's the group of students that can't spend very much....and then a whole separate group of students whose parents are funding everything and can spend as much as they want. I found rent around SLU to be higher than expected.
