I heard a rumor this week that they are talking about bulldozing Northwest Plaza, and turning it into big-box shopping stores including an IKEA. Has anyone else heard this?

I've been hearing the Ikea rumour (coming to Northwest Plaza) since I lived in the area 05-08. If it's finally happening that would be amazing, but I've been hearing it for 7 years now so whether it will REALLY happen at last is debatable.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty new to STL, so this is the first I have heard of it.

There was a pretty convincing rumor about a year and a half ago that they were putting a store in Ballwin which ended up turning out to be pure rubbish.

I hope it's true that would be amazing. I so miss not having an IKEA since moving from PHX. We even went on an IKEA spree before loading up the moving van and heading here.

There was speculation in the P-D recently that IKEA is going to be a tenant at some new development at Hanley and 64/40. One of the available spaces is a two-story big box space, so people are really hoping it's IKEA.

400,000 Sq. foot two-story "big box" retail space right off of a highway does sound a lot like an IKEA.

I don't know much (or anything really) about developing retail stores, but is it normal to not disclose what is being planned? They've said that Menards won the bid for the southern part of the development. And who actually thought that building a home improvment store across the street from another home improvement store (Home Depot), and next door to another home improvement store (Lowes) sounded like a good proposal?!

Maybe St. Ann can use the money from my speeding ticket to put a proposal together?? LOL - in gest. That whole speed trap out there is rediculous.

I would love to see the IKEA closer to the city - and 40/64 and Hanley could be a great location. The traffic there is getting really nasty, though. I am not a fan of the way they rebuilt the intersections through there with the new 40/64.

This rumor has been bubbling since at least 2005, when I moved to STL. I'll believe it when I see it.
