Every year, I always see St. Louis being at the top of the list for America's Most Dangerous Cities based on high crime rate on the same level as Chicago, Detroit, Oakland (CA), and Trenton/Camden (NJ).

I know St. Louis is separate entirely from St. Louis County and many people argue that St. Louis County is relatively safe compared to the City. Is the City of St. Louis really that dangerous while the County is very safe or is the whole thing overblown due to media and white flight?

I think its just like any other city big or small. Its about the neighborhood, what block your on and personal lifestyle choices.

It's overblown due to media and white flight (mostly). Parts of the city are as safe as the county and parts of the county are really bad. There's one part of the city (North City) that's really dangerous and that's where the crime rankings come from, but most of it is no different than any other big city in the country. You just learn where to go and where not to go. Of course, street smarts are essential, but that holds true everywhere.

While I would take the exact rankings of cities on 'most dangerous cities' lists with a grain of salt, I think that any particular city showing up on said lists year after year says something very deep. Personally, I do believe St. Louis is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. I don't believe that's media hype, but a fact. Look up "knockout game, St. Louis" for an example of the what kind of sociopathic nutjobs roam that city. I know this is America and we have it pretty good, but if anything I think the city promoter types talk down the fact the city is dangerous, not the other way around.

St. Louis County? My understanding is that it's mostly suburban and safe, but varies. The northern St. Louis County suburbs, from my understanding, are the least safe and most troubled - and that is because that part of St. Louis County lies within the pattern of outward migration from the worst parts of St. Louis city, the northern half - as well as just being most proximate to those worst parts.

Exactly my point. The northern part of the City is the most dangerous part, but the southern and central parts are a lot better. There's outward migration from all parts of the City. So parts of North County are bad because a lot of that migration comes from the worst parts of the City, but South County and Mid County (to the west) are much nicer because they border much nicer parts of the City. St. Louis is not Mayberry, but it's not all ghetto either. It has its "parts."

Avoid n. st.louis city above delmar and any adjacent suburbs bordering the city to the north except u city. Avoid east st.louis, il. Nobody has any reason to live in those areas unless you are dirt poor or a thug. You can live in the St.louis area without stepping once in those areas

We have some dangerous neighborhoods for sure. There is no reason to go there. Ever. They do not effect my life whatsoever. I have never been a victim. My perception of danger in this city is a lot different than what you read on some Forbes top 10 lists.

There is currently a MAJOR police crack down on some of our most dangerous areas. I believe 13 arrests and 2 guns have been recovered in just the first few days of the operation. Hopefully it does some good!

Oh btw, the knockout game was teenagers! School children! And they only picked on the weak. But yeah I agree they are little psychos! Must be some great parenting going on there.

Proximity. It increases your risk of being a victim.

Well I guess it's good that you're all the way in Kansas City then! I think you're safe
