Does St. Louis have any of these that are not attached to fast food places? I'm wondering about a place similar to Denver's Little Monkey Bizness.

It's not a play area per se but make sure you check out the Magic House if you haven't already! There's lots of hands on activities for kids

Have you checked out Powder Valley Nature Center near 44 and Watson Rd? They have an indoor treehouse and some other kid-oriented activities. They have a window into an outdoor pond filled with native Missouri fish, an indoor beehive, kids' coloring station, library, etc. During the winter they will have a fire in the fireplace. The trails are short (the shortest one is 1/3rd mile) if you feel like running around outside too. Plus, you can go across the road to Laumeier Sculpture Park and see the giant eyeball when you are done. Both Powder Valley and Laumeier are free.

science museum is free, but there is a kids activity area you can pay a small amount to turn your kids loose on for an hour. I think it is like $5 a kid. Plus there is other stuff you can do there for kids. Heart of the city. City Museum is expensive for a quick in and out, but a heck of a playground. Otherwise, yeah, like Monkey Joes down on Watson could be your best bet. Or else one of the many playgrounds in and around the city. The one in Forest Park by the history museum is pretty awesome.

we go to the mall play spaces when we need to burn energy and outside sucks. south county and west county both have them - i'm sure they are popular lots of places.

as far as places you pay for, city museum is great. monkey joes is expensive, but your kids can bounce ALL DAY. bounce u is a limited time, but adults can jump, too, which is a selling feature for us. sky zone in chesterfield is wall to wall trampolines - awesome.
