My boyfriend has been offered a new position in the Earth City area. We are currently from a suburb in the metro detroit area, are in our late 20s and don't have children. I am concerned about the safety of the downtown St. Louis area. I have been researching apartments online and came across a few, and while I'm interested in living in a downtown area while we are still young enough without children, I don't want to even look if the area is bad. I found one on 9th and olive that I loved based on the photos. Obviously we are in the rough draft phase of our moving adventure, but any input to give me some sort of idea would be beneficial.

Thank you for any help

If you r boyfriend is going to work in Earth City why would you be looking in downtown St. Louis for an apartment?
I would look in St Charles, Bridgeton or Maryland Heights.

Just trying to gather all of the information as possible. We would like to live in a downtown atmosphere while we are young enough to enjoy it. Thanks though.

Take into account the added expenses of living in the city such as parking. Some buildings have a garage others have a lot but either way that's an added monthly expense. Plus there's the 1% city earnings tax. You may want to consider a 6-month lease. As far as your personal safety in DT, it is hit and miss. Like getting on a ride at a travelling carnival. You'll never be 100% assured.

Is this sarcastic or genuine? Because part of me thinks that most of Ferguson is still a viable place to live (as long as we don't let the riots get to our heads). Or am I just flat-out wrong?

I don't know much about living Downtown (there are others in this forum who have a better idea), but you should also consider living in the Central West End, the Delmar Loop, Soulard, areas near Tower Grove Park, and dare I say it, Downtown St. Charles (which is closest to your boyfriend's work).

9th and Olive is a great area. That is considered as the Old Post Office District. I have many coworkers who own and rent condos in that area and have never ever felt unsafe. You'll be within walking distance of many great restaurants (you've got to try Bailey's Range burgers and shakes) and the Culinaria grocery store. Residents downtown also enjoy a awesome sense of community due to the urban pioneer mindset. Everyone takes pride in their new neighborhood and want to see progress.

The main drawback would be lack of a major retail chain like Target or a Walgreens but safety isn't one of them.

If you are looking for the urban lifestyle, Downtown St. Louis is a great place to be.

I guess I am not understanding this mindset, a man made number used for a chronological age should not determine if one has fun or not.
Anyone of any age can enjoy downtown, one does not have to be "young" to do so.
