I'm a city lover and I've lived in the CWE, and looked to move the Shaw, etc....but these are just not areas where you walk around any time of day without reservation and don't have to worry about your car getting broken into.

I agree with you about CWE, but Shaw is fine.

An armed teenager was killed a few months back there by an off-duty police officer hired by the neighborhood. To me, this indicates two things: there are people up to no good in the neighborhood, and people know it, and are trying to take preventative actions.

Again, I really like this neighborhood. Wanted to buy a house there myself. It just doesn't meet the criteria of the OP, as much as we like it there.

I believe your wrong many neighborhoods throughout the city of Saint Louis hire undercover police officers. They are actually part of many hired neighborhood stabilization and improvement teams to help improve neighborhoods and keep them safe, his presents isn't an indicator of underlying crime or problems. It could actually mean the opposite hinting towards a strong neighborhood association and stabilization team.

From January to March 2015, Shaw saw zero homicides, 1 robbery and zero aggravated assaults, and 4 acts of larceny from a motor vechicle; which is considered quite low for the city average. There were actually more assaults, larceny in Clayton or University City during the same time frame.

I suggest the OP look at block by block crime stats after they find a great place they like.

It's because of that extra security that its a good neighbourhood. The area that hires that private security is one of the more elite blocks, full of mini mansions and since part of the areas that surround it were starting to get sketchy, they hired the security to keep their area safe. And it has worked.

There's a whole discussion that could be had about that incident, but I'll state simply - it was isolated and could have easily happened in any upscale neighbourhood.

Personally, I'm going to vote for CWE over Shaw when it comes to safety and general non-sketchiness. However, neither one of them are what OP is looking for so the discussion seems irrelevant here.

LOL That's because you live in the CWE! but yes based on some of the OP's safety concerns i don't know if either areas are a perfect fit.

I actually live less than a block outside the Shaw neighborhood boundaries.

I'm moving my family to Barnes and Jewish Hospital for a new job and want to find a neighborhood that is close, but incredibly safe. I'm talking safe enough that my wife and 2 yr old can walk out the front door at any time of the day without reservation. Safe enough to park our cars on the street overnight without worrying about them being broken into.
I would prefer to be within 10 minutes of the hospital, but am willing to drive further out if there are specific neighborhoods that are really safe and nice.
Thoughts?
brentwood would be a really good choice
