Lots of the city used to be dumpy in the 70s -- hell most urban areas in this country were pretty rough during much of the 70s, 80s and 90s -- not accurate now.

That's my point! Soulard is now one of the most desirable, and expensive, places to buy into in the city.

I am in North Hampton, and it is fine. Not as well known as South Hampton, but works for me. More diverse than South Hampton, but even older and more 'urban' than South Hampton. Close enough to Shrewsbury to take Metro Link to work in Clayton, but not too far from the city's core where all the really 'fun' things are located. You know where North Hampton is if you have ever seen this....

I do not think that you did any homework when making this baseless list. I currently live downtown and am a former Soulard res and take great offense to your descriptions since they are completely false. I am not sure if I can continue taking your comments seriously.
In response to questioning my view of downtown, I meant walking the streets, and it was more of a joke anyway.

I live very close to Soulard too and their are some rough parts, I think I used the term "ghetto" a little to loosely.

And I got my info from living here my entire life (15 years) and some research.

Anything south of Arsenal and west of Jefferson, save the Lemp Mansion Historical Area. I worked near there for three years.

Soulard is great if (1) you stay north of Arsenal and (2) you have an adequate security system on your vehicle. Awesome bars to be enjoyed there!

Thats not Soulard. Benton Park is the area south of Arsenal which has really made a big turnaround in the past 10 years. West of Jefferson is not Soulard either.

My point is, I think some individuals are confused where Soulard is really located and are including it with some of the other neighborhoods surrounding it. Soulard is bounded by 55 on the west, Sidney to the South, 7th to the east, and Soulard Market to the North. That is Soulard and you wont find a ghetto or violent area in those boundaries.

Well, I live very close to Soulard and would consider myself familiar with the area. And I know for a fact that overall the Soulard area is very nice, but if you just walk around a little their, you will find some rough places. Don't get me wrong though, i'm not hating or dissing Soulard, i'm just defending what I said.

Soulard is a good area...I know some people who've had issues with panhandlers, or vagrants sleeping in their doorways, or petty car break ins...etc...as long as you use common sense especially later at night, it's fine.
