Was reading this morning on STLtoday.com that St. Louis does in fact get swarms of termites during the early summer months - is this true, and has it always been true? I grew up in central IL (about 90 miles north of STL) and I never remember anything like that happening. Matter of fact, the first time I ever had it happen was when we lived along the Gulf Coast...and it was BAD down there. Thanks!

I'm in real estate and the saying here is this, there are two types of homes in St. Louis, those who've had termites, and those that will. Don't let it bother you as they are easy to get rid of. You just want to make sure they haven't done too much damage, that's the problem.

Our apt. building is mostly brick (except for the roof and windows frames, of course). It's just more of an annoyance. When these swarms hit in AL, you couldn't walk outdoors for about 1-2 hours around sunset, as you'd just be mauled by them.

Well, I have never seen a swarm of termites. Seen a dead log with some in it, but that's it, and I've lived here all but 2 years of my 57 years. I doubt you'll ever see a swarm of termites here, but if you do, it probably will never happen again.

Yeah I can't say I've ever seen a swarm either- what a gross thought! I didn't even know that was a thing.

Here is the article I was referring to (2nd paragraph):

STLtoday - Swarm Warning: It's a big year for bugs (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/sciencemedicine/story/E5664672A51AC0DE86257435000FCDB2?OpenDocument - broken link)

I lived in IL all of my childhood and never saw anything like this until we moved to Alabama...we were sure it was a sign of the apocalypse or something...
