Interesting map.

What a shame that all these street car lines are no longer in use. Some are still there, underneath the pavement.

Wow. I'm speechless.
Who should I blame for this public transportation tragedy?
My grandparents?

Imagine... car free in St. Louis, where most every neighborhood is walkable with easy access to trams/trolleys for all citizens.

There were a lot of awful decisions made during the 20th century regarding St. Louis urbansim.

It wasn't just Saint Louis. Automobile companies had to sell cars. Oil companies had to sell petroleum products, and tire companies had to sell tire. The demise of LAs redline is well documented. I'm sure the same happened here.

Even when I was growing up in Poughkeepsie, I remember the street car tracks, and my dad and grandparents telling stories about how easy it was to get around. It is pretty sad how the nation let public transit go down the tubes.

awesome map, i always love seeing information about the evolution of the city, particularly in transportation. I had found a map detailing the "new" interstate system that was planned for St.Louis, which i found pretty interesting, looking at the routes that were picked for what would become 270, 70, 64/40, and 170. Kind of cool.

My street isn't shown! Creepy - all the surrounding streets are labeled but mine. My house wasn't built till 1933 but I'd at least expect the street to be there. LOL.

...and it says "Poor House" and "Insane Asylum" on there! Zoinks - I love the turn-of-the-century political incorrectness! I think I'm framing this sucker. It's a keeper. It's going up next to the 1933 issue of St. Louis Globe Democrat I found under my floorboards and framed.

Personally I wish we could go back to some of those names, gets to the point quicker.

Isnt "Insane Asylum" so much easier and more fun to say then, "St. Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center"

Here is the meaning "Poor House" and "Insane Asylum" of those places and many other of interest

St. Louis Hospitals
