Friends... we are the only city in America without a downtown performing arts center..
we do not exist. The rest is totally unacceptable to the travel markets and we need the
revenue and tax revenue. Dallas is opening its new Opera House in October. Washington DC
is doubling the size of Arena Stage. Kansas City opens Kauffman Center for Performing
Arts late next year. Madison Wisconin has a $400 million downtown performing arts center.
Madison Wisconsin for god's sake.

What we offer and where it is offered is not acceptable to the travel markets..and
many St. Louisans split and take their entertainment dollars elsewhere. Kiel Opera House
is not another venue. Neither is the MUNY-choked down to 7 weeks a year. St. Louis is
living out a tourism deathwish.

It's still there.

Keil means we will have another beautiful theater. And Checketts, I'm sure, will find enough events to fill Keil without killing Roberts Orpheum Theater.

Is this typical St. Louis politics?
St. Louis city news, crime, schools & politics (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/57ECCD50BC065414862575BC006698F0?OpenDocument - broken link)

A St. Louis aldermanic committee heard testimony today on a $74 million plan to finally reopen Kiel Opera House downtown but delayed its vote at least for a week, largely out of concerns that the idea could hurt the Fox Theatre.
If the Fox can't compete, then it can't compete. But the government shouldn't be allowed to delay a rehab Downtown because a theater in Midtown is complaining about it.

The Aldermen complaining about this need to be removed, since they seem to care more about their neighborhood than the city as a whole. I believe in the video before Checketts said something about bringing in shows that he owns in New York. How does that threaten the Fox?

It's just plain stupid.
