Where I'm from, 300k-400k could get you a huge house w/ a huge lot in a great area of town. I guess that's the difference between CA and AL.

When we got here we felt like kids in a candy store with the low real estate prices. We chose the the best bang for as little buck as necessary since we were buying on my salary alone. Now that she's got a job we can live comfortably while waiting for the right house to pop up.

Have you found anything yet?

Well those places exist in St. Louis too, just not the most popular areas and not anywhere near where here child is enrolled to go to school.

Places like O'Fallon: Single Family Home - 6 Rosepointe Ct, O Fallon, MO, 63366 - Realtor.com (http://www.realtor.com/realestate/o+fallon-mo-63366-1099333008/ - broken link)

Just a heads up...check how much flood insurance is in Fenton...I've never lived there, but I think I remember someone saying its a low land and may be prone to flooding. Then again I may be wrong.

The other side of the river is not bad at all.

We were looking at that area before moving here. Here is a REAL option...check this out.

Rent a place for a while, and buy this lot.

36 Wolf Creek Drive, Swansea IL 62226 - Trulia

This subdivision near ofallon is one of the few places around where the houses are ALL brick and all unique.

and for $65k that is an absolute steal. Build your own house.
