I visited the city last summer, wandered around the downtown, stopped at the library, walked down some of the main streets a few times. There was a lot of retail and so many cool historic buildings in current use or undergoing restoration. I think living in a place you take some things for granted. My trip to St. Louis, although brief, was unforgettable. The charm of the city really stays with you! I have no doubt the city has many distressed areas (I saw E. St. Louis from the highway), but there is no denying the charm and beauty of downtown! I just wanted to pass along this positive message to the residents of a much-maligned, great American city.

Thanks, and just an fyi, E. St. Louis is not part of Missouri, it's Illinois. I feel I have to get that disclaimer in their everytime people from out of town talk about it But I guess it is part of the St. Louis Metro area.

I love St. Louis. I used to live there. The crime is not a factor down town but the northern part of the city is a different story. Ha.

I visited St. Louis twice in the past two years and also came away with a strong appreciation of the city. We stayed at the Hyatt Union Station and walked around downtown--I especially liked Washington Street with all the warehouse/office buildings converted to residential use, plus Soulard market, Lafayette Square, and the whole corridor from Grand Ave (Fox Theater/St Louis U) to the Central West End and U. City. My wife, kids and I also had a very inexpensive but great dinner in the Hill.

Washington Ave, which turns into Washington Blvd as you go west.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip!
