i lived there for 2 years. Big difference, except for the racial issues.
I would go back in a minute (and most of you all know how I feel about this area).

As AJohnston_STL alludes to, for those of us who are gay or lesbian (or in interracial relationships, etc.), living in a "liberal area" ends up being rather important. It's much more pleasant to live in an area where you can be publically affectionate with your partner without drawing stares or worse from your neighbors.

There was nothing wrong with the people there, but having similar interests as your neighbors can make for better over-the-fence conversations and more invites to backyard BBQs and such.

No tinfoil hats needed, OK?
I agree with these 100%. I'm originally from a very conservative area, and if you mentioned that you wanted to move to California, or NYC, or any other so-called 'liberal' place, most of these conservative people would look at you like you had a 3rd eye in the middle of your forehead. People just want to be able to fit in, and have easy going relationships with those around them. Nothing wrong with that, liberal or conservative.

Back to the OP...Clayton would be a nice area for you, but it's fairly 'spendy'. Maybe Webster Groves? Possibly the area around Parkway Central...I had/have several somewhat 'liberal', but also quite well-off friends from around there. Although since the area's fairly wealthy, I'm sure there are quite a few conservatives in the neighborhood. Again, a bit expensive.

Webster Groves and U. City are two of the more liberal parts of the St. Louis area. Webster has the edge when it comes to schools.

First: Be extremely comforted in that St Louis has an AWESOME Special School District program that can truly help your child with Autism.

Per your requirements- focus on Webster, Brentwood, and Kirkwood Definitely. 3 years ago... 300K was little more than a 2 bd/1ba in any of those areas. Luckily, due to the market we are in, you will have a LOT more choices.

Here are some min 4 bed/2 baths in the 3:
