I will be driving across the county, taking I64/I70 through St. Louis on a Saturday. It looks like I will be coming in on I64 and then switching to I70 to get to Kansas City. What is the best route either through or around it? I would go a little bit out of my way if it would mean avoiding really heavy traffic. Thanks

Unless there is an accident or a Cardinals game is just starting or getting out, there shouldn't be any really heavy traffic. Even with heavy traffic, it shouldn't be bad.

If you are really worried about it, take I-64 to I-255 North. Then take I-270 West, which will eventually meet up with I-70. That is really out of the way, though.

TGS is completely right. I would just add that a section of I-64 (U.S. 40) in St. Louis out to I-170 is completely closed for major construction for another few months. As you're crossing the Mississippi River on the Poplar Street Bridge (the main freeway bridge coming into St. Louis), just watch for the I-70 west to Kansas City signs. If you're there in the afternoon, the I-70 inner express lanes out of downtown should be going west and you can take those until they end in 4 or 5 miles--clear sailing! Beats the pants out of carpool lanes. Be safe out there, 'kay?

Being from LA and NY, I can tell that even when the traffic in St. Louis is "bad" it still moves. Rush hour is actually an hour (or less - 5pm-6pm)

If you want to avoid traffic, drive THROUGH the city. If you want any traffic issues/heavy traffic, I suggest you take the "bypass" 270.

In other words, drive through the city.

Agreed. We just came back from vacation in Washington, D.C. The bypass was not moving at all so we took 40 as far as possible and then used Forest Park Parkway to drive through the city.

Yep, that's par for the course on 270. Maybe 270 was a decent idea at some point (I dunno?), but now that the suburbs have overgrown significantly, any drive on 270 is to be dreaded. Thankfully I only have to take it south from Olive to 64 (about 2 miles) and at 4pm.

270 is bad. but it still moves. Drive on the Long Island Expressway or the 405 in SoCal for a week, and you will appreciate the 270. faults and all.
