Hello,

I am a student from Canada who will be moving to Syracuse for an internship at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (located at 6000 Thompson Road, East Syracuse). This will be for at least 6 months and I would like to find a place where I can stay, preferably within walking distance to work. How are the neighborhoods around that company like? Can you recommend to me any safe and convenient areas to rent in, and also any good housing for rent? Are there any places that I should avoid?

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Hello stewc,

If you can give me a little more specific information about what type of place and price range you are interested in, I can then narrow down some good information for you. You can reply in a private message or here in this public section; whichever you prefer.

Bristol-Myers Squibb is in an town on the fringe of Syracuse (DeWitt) that really isn't walkable. (I wouldn't call it unwalkable in the warm weather months, as there are sidewalks along Thompson Road, but this is a quasi-freeway - unenforced and regularly exceeded 45-mile-per-hour speed limit, no crosswalks to speak of. In the snowy months, it's probably not safely walkable.)

The campus isn't too far - maybe a 20-minute walk - from Eastwood, which is a safe and pleasant neighborhood with an active retail strip. Not sure about transit, but check out some maps and CENTRO's website.

Best of luck!

Thank you for all your helpful responses. As grdnrman pointed out, I should elaborate a bit more on what I'm looking for. I'm looking for either a studio or a one bedroom (can be furnished or unfurnished), and my budget is around $600 including utilities. However, generally I'd consider safety and ease of transportation over cost. Also, I will need to rent places where lease terms are flexible, as i will likely not be staying for more than 8 months.

Default Apartments To Consider

Hi stewc,

I've searched and searched and searched for a one bedroom or studio, short term apartment for you in a safe location, not too distant from where you will be working, on public transportation route. I think the short-term requirement is the most difficult part. I could not find any place that is walkable to your workplace.

Anyway, below are the apartment complexes I suggest you contact and consider. Some of them say that they offer short-term leases and some do not indicate whether they have short-term or not; you should ask them anyway. Most of these places are closer to downtown Syracuse rather than East Syracuse. I do not know anything about the interior condition of the apartments and know nothing about the apt. managements. You will have to visit, inspect, and judge each of these apartments IN PERSON for yourself.

When it gets closer to the time when you will be moving here, you might also find other rental places listed for rent in the Post-Standard Newspaper (the city newspaper) OR the Syracuse New Times OR Scottsman Newspaper OR the Pennysaver Newspaper (all smaller newspapers). Maybe also try: http://www.orangehousing.com/syracus...ing_studio.php

Public bus operates along James Street from downtown Syracuse all the way to East Syracuse; one block from your workplace.

Default I Hope My Info Has Been Helpful

Hi stewc,

I guess that I must have "stumbled" onto the City-Data site originally while I was doing some research. I read some posts on the Syracuse forum and decided to signup to be a member.

After becoming a member, I noticed that a lot of people living in other States and areas, who had NO information or impressions about Metro Syracuse/Suburbs, wanted us members to gather, provide, and post information for them regarding the Syracuse/Central New York State region. They needed info about safe areas to live, areas to avoid, good apartment complexes within a certain price range, bus & transportation services, nice suburbs to buy a home, ratings of various school systems, area activities-events-attractions-festivals-concerts-nightlife-entertainment-parks-etc. .. They were totally-in-the-dark regarding Syracuse and really needed some insight, advice, and guidance to assist them with their move. These people were asking for various reasons: some were considering moving here, some were going to be Grad-Students here, some were offered jobs here, some simply wanted vacation info, others (like yourself) were going to be an intern or temporary resident of Metro Syracuse and they all needed good, solid, in-depth information to make their "move" to Syracuse easier.

I try to give the best possible in-depth information that I can to everyone who I think I can help. Some information I already know, some info I gather by spending a few hours on the internet, and sometimes I take my car and drive around to apartment complexes-suburban/city neighborhoods-CENTRO Bus office-newly built model homes-visit festivals/events and to other places that Inquirers are asking about. Then I post my findings.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I thought I'd send you some info about events and festivals you might enjoy attending if you are in Syracuse when the events are held.

NEW YORK STATE FAIR, Syracuse, NY, August 25 to September 5, 2011

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When you posted your request stewc, I was happy to try to assist you with info I already had and to go out to gather additional info that I did not have and needed to research. If you decide to use CENTRO Bus service occasionally, be sure to pickup those Paper Copy Bus Schedules that I recommended to you. I hope all the info I've sent you, has given you a solid basis for accomplishing your move to Syracuse.

Good luck with your move to Syracuse. Best wishes in your internship. I hope your time in Metro Syracuse is enjoyable, pleasant, and productive for you. I and the other C-D members are as close as the internet if you need additional info after you are living in the Syracuse area.

The Bristol-Myers corporate campus is a five minute walk from the village of East Syracuse, a small independent community that has some moderately nice residential neighborhoods and a small business district. It's a village that originally served as home to folks who worked on the New York Central railroad. There are stillsome NY Central and CSX retirees there and the feel of the community is solid and respectable blue collar. James Street and Eastwood would be a bit further away but would offer more convenient access to bus lines that get you to other parts of town for activities, shopping etc.

I drive through the village several times each week on my way to work (I also lived there for three years back in the late 1990's.) I sometiems spot apartment for rent signs - will check today and PM you the info if I spot them again.
