What base are you coming from?
I would suggest staying in an apartment for at least a year if you have never been here before. That will give you plenty of time to get to know which area best fits your family. I prefer areas West of the city and most of the best school districts are to the West.

Good point, as people think of the Eastern suburbs instead due to having more areas/neighborhoods that are viewed as affluent in terms of the volume. Mapping America ? Census Bureau 2005-9 American Community Survey - NYTimes.com Click on view more maps, then click on income, then look at the maps in that section.

In the West, I'd put districts like Westhill, West Genesee, Marcellus and Skaneateles against any in the area. In the East, Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and nearby Cazenovia in Madison County are right up there as well. I'd take East Syracuse-Minoa over Western districts like Solvay or Jordan-Elbridge though.

With all of this said, I'm think that the OP may want to live closer to SRC, which is in North Syracuse.
