The Top Ten Employers in the Syracuse Area

7,627.... 1.Syracuse University
6,570.... 2.SUNY Upstate Medical University
3,143.... 3.St. Joseph’s Hospital
2,700.... 4.New Process Gear Inc.
2,600.... 5.Course Hospital
2,418.... 6.Loretto Health Services
2,350.... 7.Lockheed Martin Corp.
1,500.... 8.Carrier Corp.
1,350.... 9.VA Medical Center
1,168.... 10.Community General Hospital

Total employment in Metropolitan Syracuse is about 322,000

If New Process Gear shuts down, Welch Allen moves onto the list. I did not include SUNY Oswego (which employees 1,826) since it has very little impact on the "Syracuse Urbanized Area" or Onondaga County....the core of what I consider the "Syracuse area".

Update: New Process Gear just made a deal today. The company says it will stay open until 2011.

Hrmm. I'd be curious where Turning Stone/the Oneida Indian Nation falls, since while the facility itself isn't really "Syracuse area," it certainly employs a fair number who reside within the area.

Hopefully Sensis will be up there someday. It would help diversify the Top 10 list which consists of too large a concentration of not-for-profits and healthcare facilities. While these facilities play a vital role in the community and provide more of a buffer during a recession, the lack of large private sector employers is troubling.

I don't consider any employer outside a township adjoining Onondaga County....the Syracuse area. My criteria is therefore, everyplace in Onondaga County, then towns like Hastings, Sullivan, and Cazenovia are included too.

If I included Turning Stone, it would rank 3rd with 4,777 employees as of January 2009.

I hear ya. It's rather pathetic that 7 out of the top 10 of Syracuse's top employers are either a hospital/health care or a college/university.

Sensis has a ways to go yet. As of January, Sensis employed 693.

There's nothing wrong with that. Now, if Wal-Mart or another major retailer weaseled its way onto the list, then there'd be trouble in River City.

And Welch Allyn manufactures medical equipment as well, so there is a tie-in to healthcare.

I know. It's a top employer of folks who reside here, though - because, largely, of the easy commute and the fact that Turning Stone is effectively in the middle of nowhere (sorry, Utica-Rome - but it's mostly the truth :-) )
