I was wondering if there are any clean good safeway stores in the area. My husband and I are stationed at Fort Drum originally from DC. He misses the cakes and some other things from safeway.

No SafeWay Grocery Store in the Syracuse. Just Wegmans, Price Chopper, P&C, and Aldi.

There are four Wegmans in the northern suburbs of Syracuse alone (closest to Ft. Drum)...one in Cicero on Route 11, one near North Syracuse on Taft Road, one near Liverpool on Route 57 and one on Route 31 in Clay.

Wegmans is rated better than SafeWay, so you might want to check it out.

I agree with bellafinzi. Wegmans is really good. I used to go to the Safeway with my sister in DC when she was going to Howard U. I think Wegmans is worth a try.

Well it's tough around here to find what you had in the DC area. I moved here from Ellicott City 2 years ago. I do miss having 10 Giants and Safeways within 10 min. of the house. Not only that, a lot of items you'll find just aren't carried. I love to cook. When I have a special recipe or dinner to cook for I usually make the 35 mile trip to Wegmans in Syracuse. If I go to Rome looking I sometimes cover 3 or 4 stores and still come up short. It would be quite a haul for you to drive from Camp Drum to Syracuse to shop for Groceries. Welcome to Upstate New York.

True davidmil....I would check out Hannaford, Super Wal*Mart and P&C up there. I think they have couple of other grocery stores up there too.

Thanks for the responses. We are in Syracuse at 3 times a month due to medical conditions in our family. Tricare sends us all the way there. Stopping at a Wegmans is planned enroute with our next doctor appt. The mentioned grocery stores that are up here really arent worth anyones time. I do favor Price Chopper.

I grew up in Watertown and now live in the DC area...if you are looking for a good grocery cake, a lot of people like the P & C cakes...preferrably the one located on Arsenal St, they make them fresh there. Best of luck, if you ever have any questions about the area feel free to ask!

Thats funny that our living cities are opposite. If you like P&C for their bakery you should enjoy SafeWay. If you have any questions about DC feel free to ask. I know some but my husband knows tons. Have you tried the fried chicken and maumbo sauce,

Wegman's is way better. When I was living in Northern Virginia I went out of my way to go to the Wegman's in Fairfax. As I usually tell people, Wegman's is more than a supermarket - it's an experience! I wish they'd work their way down to Richmond.
