As some of you regulars will remember, my husband and I are coming to Syracuse for a 2-3 year contract job. Since we won't be in Syracuse forever it is not a good idea to buy. However, this many years out of college I am having a hard time picturing us in an apartment. Most homes I've seen for rent are either much larger than we need and cost $1500+ a month, OR they look real small and shabby in questionable areas of the city.
We thought we had a situation worked out with a homeowner in Strathmore, but that is falling thru. Ideally, we would like to find a small 2/3 bedroom home in a decent area for under $800 OR a housesitting/house-sharing situation with someone who maybe travels for their job or has to be gone for long periods of time that would rent to us cheaper just for taking care of the place in their absence.
Any ideas on how to find the kind of situation we are looking for? Craigs List seems to mostly cater to students, so no luck there. Perhaps someone here would be interested in a responsible couple taking care of their home for them for two years?

I am hoping for something besides an apt too, anybody else have any ideas? Thanks!!
This one looks really good - are you saying this area is a good one?

Yes, that area of the Northside is fine. It's right by the Pond Street Wegmans and Mcchesney Park. It's a quiet area and I sometimes stop by the Wegmans after work at night. Generally, anything in the immediate Grant Boulevard area, especially north of it, it fine. Here's the street view for that area: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...&cbp=11,0,,0,5

What about the north side being more crimeridden like this story suggests??
And you said stay north of Grant, but this house looks to be south of Grant? Would you still recommend it?
That area where the house is is fine. Where the article is talking about is more towards inner city Northside neighborhoods where there are some slumlords. You wouldn't be in that area. You would be more towards Grant Middle School and close to the little business district on Grant too. There is a senior citizens apartment building by that rental too.
For reference, parts of the Northside south of 1st North Street get steadily rougher the further in you go. It's not a constant war zone or anything, but it is definitely more working class and has some properties that are suspect. North of 1st North is generally fine. I drive on Butternut on the way home many times at night and you can see how the further north you go on Butternut, the calmer and more stable things look. Pond is similar, but again you would be in a quiet and more stable area of the Northside.
Also, keep in mind with Syracuse, you can pretty much drive anywhere and the crime is generally between people that know each other. By the way, the South Side has the worst reputation and Syracuse is odd in that all sides of town have some rough inner city neighborhoods and nice outer neighborhoods, including the South Side.
I think you would be fine in that location.
