I think it's very easy.
iPad = 10.1 inches.
Fire = 7 inches.
iPad wins.

Until a 10" Kindle Fire comes out I can't seriously consider a Fire...

Because 10" is the right size for everyone, right?

The real competition for the Kindle Fire will be the Nook Tablet. For an extra $50, the Nook Tablet gives the the following:

1. Double the RAM (1GB vs. 512MB)
2. Double the storage (16GB vs. 8GB)
3. MicroSD card reader
4. Bluetooth
5. Microphon
6. Longer battery life
7. Support at a brick and mortar store. Where do you take your Kindle Fire when you need help?

What you don't get - at least at first. There is the possibility someone could port the Amazon ROM to the Nook Tablet in the future.
1. Amazon's cloud assisted web browser
2. Amazon's custom version of Android

Otherwise the two tablets are nearly identical. Same CPU/GPU, same screen size/density.

I currently have a Nook Color - rooted with CM7. If I were to get another tablet, it would probably be the Nook Tablet. The difference in hardware is well worth the extra $50.

I probably won't get either though. My Nook Color is still working great. I'll probably wait another year or two and get whatever is out then..

I thought they had a 10" model in the works?

Not for everyone, but definitely for me. I received my iPad as a gift, but after playing around with a few other smaller tablets, I couldn't see having a smaller form factor as being useful to me. I primarily use my iPad for note-taking and idea sketches--both of which would seem to be a pain for me on a 7" screen.

Not having to put up with smarmy, ahole Apple people = +1 for Kindle Fire.

Plus...amazon.com is the best customer service experience I have ever encountered. I shop from the ALL THE TIME and they are incredibly responsive and helpful.

That being said, we have an ipad 2.

This. Still, my this product only moved my tablet interest meter from 0.5 to 0.7 on a scale of 1-10.
