If you want to use your iPad for work-related stuff...e.g. taking notes during a meeting, then I like "Notes Plus". I've also heard good things about Penultimate although I haven't used it personally.
If you want to do file sharing among multiple devices (iPad, iPhone/Android, PC, etc.) then look into Dropbox.
There are thousands of useful apps, however most are very specialized so it really depends on your needs. I'm a composer and use a lot of the music apps, but most people wouldn't.
Other apps I use a lot: travel, news aggregators, social media (mainly Instagram), and expense tracking.
Dragon Dictation, I use it while in the car on long drives to make notes about various things. Observations for my travel blog, ideas for the next chapter of my novel, etc.
I use the Kindle App a lot. I also use Perfect Reader to store PDF files, usually those are scans from books such as maps or passages I want to remember while I'm trying to find a Ghost Town, old gold mine, or other hidden location.
Google Earth - for the obvious reasons. I'll "pre-load" it by looking at maps in the area I'm going to be in before I loose signal, it's been a life saver many times.
MapQuest - for the navigation, along with Google Maps. I use both, MapQuest for longer trips, Google Maps when I need to find something nearby and want to see multiple routes on how to get there.
I also use the Wordpress App for blogging on the road, and use Writers Kit coupled with Dropbox to work on my novel.
I'm thinking of buying an iPad for my 9-year nephew. He's autistic but, on the spectrum, he would be considered a high functioning child. He's smart and curious but has poor social interaction skills, which has hindered his development. So I think a tablet could address some of the 3 Rs he may be missing out in a classroom setting. Should I purchase an iPad, what apps should I consider?
