I am moving to Tallahassee on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009. I am transferring to FSU law school for my 2nd year. I would like to live downtown; I'm thinking The Cloisters of All Saints. Does anyone know about that area? Is the immediate vicinity and nearby shopping area safe, run-down, saturated with homeless/ghetto people, etc.?

I plan to spend $800-$1000.00 for a 1 bedroom condo in a complex with a gated entry and/or security guard. I also want to be within 10-15 minutes (driving time) to the law school.

I don't mind somewhat of a party scene because I am a single guy and I like to go out on the weekends, but not during the week.

I appreciate any advice/suggestions.

It's not a bad area; it could be better but definitely not a "bad" area. The nearby corridor is also being redeveloped so you can expect to see some changes over the next couple of years.

Cloisters proximity to the Law School isn't bad either (2-3 minute drive, 10 minute walk - depends on Gaines Street traffic).

That depends. Just NW of downtown is Frenchtown, which is not a great area. All Saints is part of a neighborhood revitilization project, so in a sense the neighborhood is "getting better." It's still more or less student ghetto (though nice and new) and again, it borders some not very nice areas.

I lived right next to the law school and besides being student party central it was otherwise safe. I would stay north of Gaines and south of Tennessee street if you absolutely have to live that close to the law school. It's convenient, and if you are a young heterosexual male, very scenic....but there are far better places to live in Tallahassee if you don't mind a 10-15 minute drive.

"Safe" is a relative term. I lived in that general area for many years and never had an issue. I do know of a few people who were mugged behind the bars on Tennessee street, but that's not a frequent occurrence. All Saints is not the safest place in Tallahassee (which has some very, very safe areas on the north side of town), but compared to any major city it's pretty safe.
