Has there been any new proposals for the severly high insurance and property tax? I want to move to Florida, but will not if it continues to be how I hear it is (high taxes, very high insurance). List any new proposals if you can.

Don't hold your breath. The latest fix from the legislature on insurance might be about to backfire. My company (USAA) informed its members that they would no longer insure second homes in the state (primary home policies will not be cancelled), and the only new policies they will write in the future are military transferred here with orders. When USAA moves out, you know something is wrong. I can't wait to see what the tax fix is.

Don't hold your breath is right, we got our insurance bill yesterday it went up 30%. Its awful. We have Amica. We didnt get a break. Taxes that wont get voted on until January. I doubt if it will pass. ( the people have been in there homes will not really benefit from it only new home owners like me that got no protection from the high taxes. Scare tactics are in paper everyday to get people to vote no. What is counties doing with all the extra money since 2002. They need to give it back.

The "tax fix" is a joke. The insurance situation depends on the weather, not the crooks in Talahassee. Counties keep talking about having to cut services, but I can't see anything they do better now than before the year 2000. In fact they have done more damage than good. Look at Miami-Dade county. They have put up thousands more stop signs, ridiculous accident causing "traffic circles" and wasted billions in the school system. My parents tell me that the only improvement in Miami-Dade county has been better transit service. Most of my friends still in south Florida have one foot out the door and will be moving next year if things here do not improve.

Default $15.00?

What an insult. I thought it'd be at least $100+.

The average savings will be 180/yr or 15/month. I believe smaller homes <$250K will benefit more.

Default Citizens

I got a check for $92.00 yesterday.........not even $100.00, and can't wait to see what happens after Sept. 1st when they start renewing without sinkhole coverage........and if you want it (coverage) what they will charge.

Right now I have sinkhole coverage and my bill is $1,600......so in theory my bill should stay the same or if I don't want the coverage my bill should be way lower. Living in Hernando Cty, I would be crazy to drop the sinkhole coverage, they (Citizens) must think we're all a bunch of idiots, they just make up rules as they go along, and what burns my a**** is that some people think they have no choice but to pay their crazy assessments.
When will people wake up?

Friend of mine lives in Ft Walton Beach, not on the water. Her insurance bill this year from State Farm was $8,000!! She's NEVER had a claim, not even after Ivan and Katrina. She called around and managed to lower it to $2,400 by switching companies.
