I am considering biking to work (save gas but also get a nice excercise in both ways) it appears taking Memorial Highway driving I have a 7 mile bike ride, but switching to biking google maps puts me going down the airport road and adds 2.5 miles to the route.

You can ride you bike on parts of it, but not the freeway portions down near the airport.

thats the area I would need to ride on, I think it woudl actually be safer on there to with the wider shoulders and no stop lights for people to run.

It's illegal to ride a bicycle on a limited access facility, which is something that portion of Memorial Highway is. A limited access facility is basically defined as a roadway where there is no easement, meaning that owners of adjacent property cannot directly access the road from a driveway. You can't ride a bicycle on either the roadway or the shoulder of a road like this.

Thank you for the detailed explaination, while driving down there today I noted a sign that said bikes prohibited... Looks like its gonna be a 9 mile bike ride from the Hillsbourough/ Memorial hwy area to wesrshore
. Anyone got any suggestions on a safe route?

biking can be very hazarous in this part of the country - there are a lot of people who text while driving and don't know that a bicycler is even on the road.

I wish I did...I rode my bike for about 6 or 7 months and pooh-poohed everyone who told me it wasn't safe. After about 4 very close calls, I had to admit defeat. And I had a bike lane the whole way.

The more I read about it I think so to.. I am going to be going down Hillsborough (sidewalk) and then either go down neighborhood streets or down dale mabry (not sure how far down their sidewalks are). Im gonna equip my bike with some mirrors. but it should be mostly sidewalk or neighborhood. Damn texters! I dont text period!

Texters, people talking on cell phones, people putting one makeup. And it's just people plain not paying attention. One of my incidents I was nearly brained by a passenger in a sixteen wheeler who threw open his door to empty out his coffee. He was about 20 vehicles from the stoplight so I was still moving.
