Sand Key is my favorite regular beach spot. It's just south of Clearwater, so it's similar, except minus the big crowds and noise. Sand Key has more families and is lower key in general.

I agree! It is 5 minute drive from Clearwater without the difficult parking and craziness. They also have a playground in the shade of the trees, though it is not right on the beach. You might see it while driving in.

Bring quarters for parking.

As an older native Floridian I really appreciate Indian Rocks Beach and the fact it's held on to its past versus overdeveloping. The main beach access is at 17th and Gulf Boulevard. Indian Rocks Beach is mostly older low-rise buildings so you don't get that "concrete canyon" feeling. It's also not overcrowded. You can also actually walk (one or two blocks) to two good casual non-chain restaurants from the beach, versus getting back in the car. Very mommy-to-be friendly! Check out Keegan's Seafood Grille or Guppy's.

A couple of posters mentioned Sand Key Park which is just over the bridge south of Clearwater Beach. Beautifully maintained county park with a clean beach. They sift the sand with a rake at least daily. You can rent a cabana tent there on the beach or bring your own shelter. They have showers/facilities, a change machine for the parking meters, and its nice and quiet. The beach is patrolled by law enforcement regularly.

Well it sounds like Sand Key would be the place to hit up My mother is also visiting in a few months, and is an amateur photographer, so she wanted to also hit some spots for sunset/sunrise shots. This will only be my second time in a large body of water, believe it or not. In Nebraska, we just had lakes My first was only a year ago on my honeymoon!
